Biogas production occurs at temperatures between 40 and 50 °C in the waste body.

Based on this increased temperature, biogas emission can be traced using IR scanning. 

Above example shows highest emission at the slopes of an open landfill, indicating the higher horizontal permeability in comparison to the vertical permeability.
